On-Scene Crash Investigation 32-Hours |
This class is offered for the crash INVESTIGATOR. It is designed to teach officers to identify, document, and preserve evidence at a crash scene. It is meant for officers who will be responding to the scene of a crash and might be assisting a reconstructionist or gathering the needed evidence for a later reconstruction. It includes a short introduction to the math equations used in reconstructing crashes, but does not require the calculation of the math equations used in advanced classes. This class will give an officer the ability to assure the needed information is available for the reconstructionist. It will provide the department with an officer (or officers) trained to identify, document, and preserve critical evidence that is often lost at the scene. Tuition is waived and POST credit is available for all full-time Missouri law enforcement officers. Non law enforcement personnel may attend, however, you will need to contact Bev Richardson for our current non-Missouri law enforcement course tuition.

Crash Investigation Series, 20-Hours Each |
The Crash Series is designed to provide training from Basic Crash Investigation through Advanced Crash Investigation. The series must be taken consecutively and includes 6 courses, each 20 hours in length. The course schedule runs Wednesday, 8 am through Friday noon, once each month. The series prepares officers to attend a Reconstruction class and is math intensive. While the classes start at a slower "mathematical" pace, by Crash 3 the math is at an upper high school or freshman college level. Tuition is waived and POST credit is available for all full-time Missouri law enforcement officers. Non law enforcement personnel may attend, however, you will need to contact Bev Richardson for our current non-Missouri law enforcement course tuition.
Crash 1 - Jan. 26-28, 2009 -
Provides a foundation of knowledge for new or inexperienced students. It will also serve as a refresher for more experienced students, familiar with the basics of crash investigation. The students will be taught useful information necessary to develop both basic and intermediate skills and proficiency in crash investigation. Topics include: a review of the S.T.A.R.S. report form; the basics of calculator usage; an overview of crash scene safety; physical facts at the scene; tire marks; and some basic measuring and diagramming. NOTE: The Crash Series is math intensive by the time the student reaches the completion of Crash 3.

Crash 2 - Feb. 18-20, 2009 - Provides the student with intermediate skills focusing on identifying, collecting and preserving evidence, as well as field sketches and scaled drawings. Topics include: an introduction to Newton’s Laws and how they relate to crash investigation; an introduction to the math formulas used in the Crash Series and Reconstruction; examples of preliminary use of the math formulas; and an explanation of drag factors and their importance to crash investigation. NOTE: The Crash Series is math intensive by the time the student reaches the completion of Crash 3.

Crash 3 - March 18-20, 2009 - Provides the student with an understanding of time/distance and how it relates to crash investigation. The students will receive a methodical progression of math formulas that allow a basic fundamental understanding of how time/distance works in relation the crash investigation and reconstruction. Topics include: time/distance problems dealing with a single vehicle skids and crashes; vehicle and pedestrian crashes; two-vehicle crashes; and an overview of motorcycle crashes. NOTE: The Crash Series is math intensive by the time the student reaches the completion of Crash 3.

Crash 4 - April 15-17, 2009 -
Provides officers with useful information necessary to develop advanced skills and proficiency in Crash investigation. It is designed for students who have attended basic traffic crash investigation courses, or to be used as a refresher for students who wish to update their skills in solving math formulas used in reconstructing traffic crashes. The student is introduced to the conservation of momentum and how it relates to crash investigation. The student will begin calculating crashes, using momentum equations for both in-line crashes and angled collisions. Topics include: a time/distance review, in-line momentum, 360 degree momentum, and practical work sheets. NOTE: From Crash 4 - on, the Series is math intensive.

Crash 5 - May 20-22, 2009 -
Provides the student with information required to develop advanced skills in conducting crash investigations and solving mathematical equations utilized in completing a traffic crash reconstruction. Correctly solving mathematical equations used for crash reconstruction is highly emphasized. This section is specifically designed for students who have completed Crash 3 and 4, or other advanced traffic crash investigation courses. This course could serve as a refresher for students who want to update their skills in field sketching, scale diagramming, and solving math equations. During this course, students will measure, diagram, and calculate speeds for at least two practical exercises. Topics include: an airborne equation review, in-line and 360 degree momentum reviews, and at least two practical exercises where students measure, diagram, and calculate speeds for “staged” crashes. NOTE: From Crash 4 - on, the Series is math intensive.

Crash 6 - June 17-19, 2009 - Provides students with the opportunity to apply all aspects of the skills they have acquired in Crash 1 – 5. The students will be expected to successfully solve advanced mathematical equations, and to gather, document, and preserve evidence necessary to complete the basics of a reconstruction. Crash 4 and 5 are required for acceptance into Crash 6. This course is the culmination of all the student has learned. Upon arrival at Crash 6 the students will have at least 4 “staged” crashes. They will be required to measure, diagram, and calculate speeds. Also, they will be required to calculate the time/distance problems that go along with each crash. The student will also be given a set of baseline/coordinate measurements and asked to complete a diagram and the math calculations to determine speeds, as well as some time/distance problems. Crash 6 is designed to prepare the student to attend Basic Crash Reconstruction class. This course in the Crash Series is very math intensive.

Crash Reconstruction Preparation 12-Hours |
Crash Reconstruction Preparation is designed primarily to prepare officers who have completed the Crash Series or other Advanced Crash trainings, for the math performed in the 80-Hour Reconstruction Class. During this course, the student will have the opportunity to sharpen his/her math skills. It is a student-driven class that allows the student to work in areas where they feel they need review. The course has at least 2 instructors, and they provide individual assistance as the class works through some of the more difficult phases of mathematical calculations done in Crash Reconstruction. Topics can include such items as: evidence collection, field sketches, scale diagramming, and work on difficult math equations and problems. This course is recommended for students who did not attend the Crash Series in the current year and for those who feel they need additional work on math skills. Tuition is waived and POST credit is available for all full-time Missouri law enforcement officers. Non law enforcement personnel may attend, however, you will need to contact Bev Richardson for our current non-Missouri law enforcement course tuition.
NOTE: This is a math intensive course.
