September 25-27, 2008
Missouri’s 2nd Annual SRTS Conference is scheduled for Sept. 25-27, 2008. in Branson at the Chateau on the Lake, and registration is underway.
The Safe Routes to School program is designed to encourage children to walk, ride or wheel to school. In addition to public awareness and outreach efforts, the program works to improve biking and walking conditions around schools.
“Safety professionals and educators from around the state will learn how to make our communities more accessible and friendly for kids to get to school,” said Todd Messenger, Safe Routes to School Coordinator.
The first day of the conference will provide a one-day National SRTS Course from the University of North Carolina’s National Center for Safe Routes to School involving the 5 E’s; engineering, education, enforcement, encouragement, and evaluation. Another option on the first day is the one-day Walking School Bus Coordinator’s workshop provided by the PedNet Coalition from Columbia. The second and third days of the conference will involve presentations about the SRTS efforts from the federal, state and local levels. A more detailed agenda will be posted in the near future.
