About the Missouri Safety Center
was designated as the State's Safety Center in 1967, by the Commission on Higher Education in collaboration with the Governor's Traffic Safety Coordinating Committee. The Center is an organization, dedicated to injury prevention, that has provided organized leadership and a unified effort specifically in the highway safety area. It draws together University personnel, state and local agencies, business and industry, safety professionals and the public-at-large in efforts to reduce deaths and injuries on the highways, at work, during recreation and in the home. Center activities include programs of instruction, research, publications, public information, as well as, conferences and special services. It utilizes a staff of specialists offering programs in pupil transportation, motorcycle safety, beginning driver education, advanced driving techniques, breath alcohol instrument training, crash investigation and reconstruction, commercial vehicle training, sobriety checkpoint supervision, and several other training courses.
The Center was approved by the State of Missouri, Department of Public Safety, as a Continuing Education Provider in 1997 with a renewal in March of 2000. Continuing Education Units (CEHs) are awarded for the Center's law enforcement training programs to officers who successfully complete course requirements.
To promote safety in Missouri and the Nation, the Missouri Safety Center strives to prevent injury and death through technology transfer, instruction, research, and public service. The Missouri Safety Center's mission is supported by the University of Central Missouri's administration, the State Legislature, and a wide variety of clientele from business, industry and government entities and the daily communication with our diverse clientele.
The Missouri Safety Center is an organization dedicated to injury prevention. It utilizes a staff of specialists and the services of University personnel to provide leadership and a unified program in injury prevention. Center activities include programs of instruction, research, publications, public information, as well as, conferences and special services.
I. Coordinate with Missouri state and local agencies, professional organizations and business and industry to address technology upgrades, training needs, and other public safety issues.
II. Expand the number of safety programs offered and the diversity of target populations served to meet changing safety needs and to remain in the forefront of safety technology.
III. Encourage Center staff to maintain close working relationships with safety professionals and/or safety organizations/agencies off-campus to develop more responsive safety programming.
IV. Promote interdisciplinary activities with other Central faculty, staff, and students in grant and research activities, safety training programs, and other cooperative initiatives.
The Missouri Safety Center continues to promote a working partnership with local, state, and federal agencies, safety advocate groups, civic organizations, business & industry, and other professional organizations.
